Kitesurfing Champ Rediscovers Buggying
Injuries are not all bad!

Su Kay, the current New Zealand womens kitesurfing champ, is discovering that three wheels can be just as much fun as a board. Due to an injury Su is off the water for a while, but her adrenaline addiction has led her to dust off the kite buggy and get into some freestyle, three-wheeled action. In her own words...
"Adrenaline withdrawl symptoms have lead to me exploring a new kiting freestyle. Four months off the water and still not being able to get back into powered kitesurfing freestyle and the water being a bit cold... has got me back into a buggy. If you thought this was a boring sport think again!
In a buggy you can explore three dimensional terrain and drop off the back of dunes. Doing flat spins, traveling backwards and going on 2 wheels are all challenging skills you learn early on, but you don't have to stay on the hard stuff. You can jump using kickers or off flat ground and like kitesurfing you can go as far as powered freestyle, including kite loops. If speed is your thing then you can look at getting a heavy buggy with perfect weight distribution and well balanced wheels and see if you can break 100km/hr!
Oh, I am having fun on the land at the moment - the winter snow can wait!"

Fastest Kite Buggy in NZ
Perrin Melchior The SAND SIFTER himself is the fastest man in a kite buggy in New Zealand
Perrin owner of Kite Works in Auckland recently exceeded 100 kmh at Muriwai beach on the west coast, hear is a short report from the man himself and a couple of pictures.
Hi there
Here is my personal top speed in a buggy - 101 KPH \ 62 MPH
On the 03\03\2006 I finally broke the 100 kph barrier after years of trying.
I did it using a Peter Lynn Comp Buggy with upgraded 32mm extended side frames, a 1.4m giga strong axle and a 5 wheel kit.
Wheels were alloy rims with treaded tyres
Buggy mass is 35kg, driver mass is 70kg and I carried 40kg ballast
The kite was a 12m Naish Shockwave hard wired to the buggy frame
The beach was Muriwai, New Zealand .Soft, damp, black iron sand with a 2km run in 25-40 knots cross onshore (south west)
Most of the runs that day were.

Muriwai Moose Madness 2005
If anyone's looking for me, or Craig, or Sam during the next week or so, we will probably be somewhere in the area indicated by the whites lines in the diagram below...

This weekend (1-2 October) is the annual Moose Meet. 'Mooseland' is at the North end of Muriwai Beach, near Auckland. The place is incredible, with a 50km long fast beach, and acres of sands dunes. Of course getting there is half the fun to. Tomorrow morning I meet up with Craig and Sam in Picton to catch the ferry to the North Island. We then make the long drive to Muriwai (just North-west of Auckland). On Saturday Morning we drive or buggy the length of the beach to camp in the dunes at South Head. After the Moose Meet weekend is over a group will continue North for a few days to explore some of the other huge beaches in the area.
I promise lots of photos and maybe even some video when we return. Until then, heres some pictures from last years Moose Meet.
See you in a 8 days!

Kite Buggy New Zealand

Welcome to KBNZ. As the name suggests, this site is all about kite bugging in New Zealand. The kite buggy was invented here and when you take a look around at the variety locations in this country suited to the sport of kite buggying, it is easy to see why.
This site came into being because a few kiwi kite buggy pilots decided we needed a way to share our collective knowledge about the sport. We were surprised a site like this didn't exsist already in NZ, so we made our own.
New Zealand has so many great beaches suited to kite buggying that you could spend a life time trying to buggy them all, if you could find them. We would like this site to become not only a way to share and find new places to buggy, but also to talk about gear, kite buggy events, and to brag about stuff we've done in a kite buggy. Kite and Buggy gear reviews will regular features, along with reports on any bugging 'missions' we go on.
We decided on a weblog style site for this site, which means many authors can contribute (invites going out to several new authors around New Zealand very soon), and you, the reader can also contribute via the comments link at the bottom of each post.
So now we are up and running (before Christmas as promised) remember to bookmark us and return soon for a taste of kite bugging down-under.
